Long-term storage covers what happens after the cure. The enemies are light, heat, oxygen and moisture swings. THC degrades slowly to CBN mostly through oxidation, and terpenes evaporate. Stored dark at room temperature, cannabis keeps reasonably well for one to two years; in light and warmth the loss is much faster (Fairbairn et al. 1976; Zamengo et al. 2019).
In practice
The basics:
- Container: airtight glass, filled well to limit headspace; opaque or kept in a dark cupboard.
- Temperature: cool and stable, roughly 15-21 °C (60-70 °F) or cooler; avoid heat swings.
- Moisture: stable around 0.55-0.65 aw, set by a proper cure.
- Light: none. UV and visible light speed THC breakdown.
- Handling: open as little as possible.
Freezing cured flower is debated. Frozen trichome heads become brittle and break off with handling. If you freeze, seal airtight first and let jars warm fully before opening to avoid condensation.
House position: humidity packs are not needed, a marketing gimmick that robs terpenes.
Don't confuse with
- Curing: the active finishing phase, with burping.
- Seed storage: seeds need drier conditions and cold.
- Vacuum sealing: can crush buds; it's one storage option, not a must.
THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the neutral, decarboxylated cannabinoid mainly responsible for cannabis's reported intoxicating effects; the living plant makes it almost entirely as THCA.CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid formed mainly when THC or THCA oxidises after harvest, so high CBN readings usually signal age, heat, light or air exposure, not plant ripeness.Terpenes are volatile hydrocarbon compounds built from five-carbon isoprene units; in cannabis they are made in the trichome heads and are a major part of aroma and flavour.Holding dried cannabis in sealed containers so its moisture declines slowly and evenly over weeks, improving smoothness and aroma.Trichome heads are the bulbous resin-filled tops of capitate glandular trichomes, where cannabis makes and stores nearly all its cannabinoids and terpenes; they are the raw material of hash.A salt-solution sachet sold to hold a sealed container at a fixed relative humidity; GenetixBay regards them as a marketing gimmick that robs terpenes.Briefly opening sealed curing jars to release moist air and let fresh air in, so moisture keeps declining slowly during the cure.A 0-1 measure of how freely available the water in a material is; for dried cannabis flower the accepted range is about 0.55-0.65 aw.The loss of volatile aroma compounds from cannabis through evaporation, oxidation and handling, fastest for monoterpenes and worst in warm, fast drying and poor storage.
