Long-term storage covers what happens after the cure. The enemies are light, heat, oxygen and moisture swings. [THC](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/thc.md) degrades slowly to [CBN](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cbn.md) mostly through oxidation, and [terpenes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene.md) evaporate. Stored dark at room temperature, cannabis keeps reasonably well for one to two years; in light and warmth the loss is much faster (Fairbairn et al. 1976; Zamengo et al. 2019).

## In practice

The basics:
- **Container**: airtight glass, filled well to limit headspace; opaque or kept in a dark cupboard.
- **Temperature**: cool and stable, roughly 15-21 °C (60-70 °F) or cooler; avoid heat swings.
- **Moisture**: stable around 0.55-0.65 aw, set by a proper cure.
- **Light**: none. UV and visible light speed THC breakdown.
- **Handling**: open as little as possible.

Freezing [cured](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/curing.md) flower is debated. Frozen [trichome heads](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome-heads.md) become brittle and break off with handling. If you freeze, seal airtight first and let jars warm fully before opening to avoid condensation.

House position: [humidity packs](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/humidity-pack.md) are not needed, a marketing gimmick that robs terpenes.

## Don't confuse with

- **Curing**: the active finishing phase, with [burping](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/burping.md).
- **Seed storage**: seeds need drier conditions and cold.
- **Vacuum sealing**: can crush buds; it's one storage option, not a must.
