Gas describes a pungent fuel-, diesel- or solvent-like aroma, often with sour, skunky or garlicky notes. Through overuse it has also become general praise: "that's gas" means "that's good".
In practice
The aroma itself is real and complex. Research points to more than the classic terpenes: minor sulfur compounds, including prenylated volatile sulfur compounds, contribute strongly to the skunky, "gassy" edge of some cultivars even at very low concentrationsbeing reviewed. Terpene percentages on a label do not capture it well.
Because gas is fashionable, many modern lines are bred toward it, and many crosses share the same few gas-heavy parents.
Don't confuse with
- Loud: strong aroma of any kind; gas is one flavour of loud.
- Skunk: an older word for a related pungent profile, and also a lineage name.
- Candy terps: the sweet, fruity end of the modern market.
Myth check
"Gas means potent." Aroma and THC content are separate traits; the nose does not measure cannabinoids. GenetixBay also agrees that the gas/candy trend is crowding out classic profiles. See why everything tastes the same.
Skunk is a generic name for a family of early hybrid cultivars from the 1970s and 1980s, and for the pungent, musky aroma they made famous.Terpenes are volatile hydrocarbon compounds built from five-carbon isoprene units; in cannabis they are made in the trichome heads and are a major part of aroma and flavour.Sulfur (S) is a secondary nutrient taken up as sulfate, used in the amino acids cysteine and methionine; deficiency yellows new growth fairly evenly.Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) are trace sulfur-containing aroma molecules, especially prenylated thiols, that give cannabis its skunky, gassy smell at concentrations far below terpenes.Candy terps is slang for the sweet, fruity, dessert-like aroma profile fashionable in modern cannabis, often paired with gas as the dominant market trend.THC (Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol) is the neutral, decarboxylated cannabinoid mainly responsible for cannabis's reported intoxicating effects; the living plant makes it almost entirely as THCA.A cannabinoid is any compound that binds the body's cannabinoid receptors or shares the typical cannabis terpenophenolic structure; the plant-made ones are phytocannabinoids such as THCA and CBDA.Terps is slang for terpenes, and loosely for a cannabis cultivar's whole aroma and flavour, even though many aroma compounds are not terpenes.Loud is slang for flower with a very strong, room-filling aroma, often implying high quality.Zaza is slang for flower marketed as premium or exotic, usually with loud aroma and bright bag appeal; the word signals price and fashion, not tested quality.
