Gas describes a pungent fuel-, diesel- or solvent-like aroma, often with sour, [skunky](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/skunk.md) or garlicky notes. Through overuse it has also become general praise: "that's gas" means "that's good".

## In practice

The aroma itself is real and complex. Research points to more than the classic [terpenes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene.md): minor [sulfur](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sulfur.md) compounds, including prenylated [volatile sulfur compounds](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/volatile-sulfur-compounds.md), contribute strongly to the skunky, "gassy" edge of some cultivars even at very low concentrations. Terpene percentages on a label do not capture it well.

Because gas is fashionable, many modern lines are bred toward it, and many crosses share the same few gas-heavy parents.

## Don't confuse with

- **Loud**: strong aroma of any kind; gas is one flavour of loud.
- **Skunk**: an older word for a related pungent profile, and also a lineage name.
- **Candy terps**: the sweet, fruity end of the modern market.

## Myth check

"Gas means potent." Aroma and [THC](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/thc.md) content are separate traits; the nose does not measure [cannabinoids](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabinoid.md). GenetixBay also agrees that the gas/[candy](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/candy-terps.md) trend is crowding out classic profiles.
