Short answer
For trained plants in 11–19 L (3–5 gal) pots, fit one or two in a 2 x 2 ft tent, two in a 2 x 4, two or three in a 3 x 3 and two to four in a 4 x 4: about 1–4 plants per m². A sea of green packs 9–25 small plants per m². Grower practice; your legal plant limit comes first.
Legal first. Many places cap the number of plants per home. Check your local rules before you plan.
Why
The canopy is the limit, not the plant count. Higher planting density raised yield per area in controlled work on drug-type cannabis, but lowered yield per plant and made cannabinoid content less uniform [1]. Density is among the strongest yield drivers in the cannabis literature [2], yet past full canopy cover, more plants mostly add crowding.
Fewer plants need longer veg. Two trained plants can fill a 4 x 4; sixteen small ones fill it with almost no veg. Belgian yield trials used 12–20 plants per m² [3].
Crowding blocks airflow at the base and lets disease spread between plants.
The numbers
| Tent | Area | Trained plants (11–19 L) | Autos (11–15 L) | Sea of green (1–4 L) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 ft (60 x 60 cm) | 0.36 m² | 1–2 | 1–2 | 3–9 |
| 3 x 3 ft (90 x 90 cm) | 0.81 m² | 2–3 | 2–4 | 7–20 |
| 2 x 4 ft (60 x 120 cm) | 0.72 m² | 2 | 2–3 | 6–18 |
| 4 x 4 ft (120 x 120 cm) | 1.44 m² | 2–4 | 4–6 | 13–36 |
| 5 x 5 ft (150 x 150 cm) | 2.25 m² | 4–6 | 6–9 | 20–56 |
SOG column = 9–25 plants/m² × area.
What to do
- Check your legal plant limit.
- Decide how long you can veg: long veg means fewer plants.
- Pick a pot that fits the footprint with a few centimetres to spare.
- Train each plant with LST or a net so the canopy fills edge to edge.
- Leave room to reach every plant and keep air moving under the canopy.
Common mistakes
- Cramming in plants instead of training fewer.
- Running a sea of green from mixed seed, which stretches unevenly.
- Ignoring the plant limit because "it's only a tent".
