# How many plants can I fit in my grow tent?

> A grow tent fits about one or two trained plants in 60 x 60 cm (2 x 2 ft), two in 2 x 4 ft and two to four in 4 x 4 ft: roughly 1–4 plants per square metre. A sea of green packs 9–25 small plants per square metre. More plants raise yield per area only up to a point, and legal plant limits usually decide first.

## Short answer

For trained plants in 11–19 L (3–5 gal) pots, fit one or two in a 2 x 2 ft tent, two in a 2 x 4, two or three in a 3 x 3 and two to four in a 4 x 4: about 1–4 [plants per m²](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/plant-density.md). A [sea of green](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sog.md) packs 9–25 small plants per m². *Grower practice*; your legal [plant limit](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/plant-count-limit.md) comes first.

**Legal first.** Many places cap the number of plants per home. Check your local rules before you plan.

## Why

The canopy is the limit, not the plant count. Higher planting density raised yield per area in controlled work on drug-type cannabis, but lowered yield per plant and made [cannabinoid](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabinoid.md) content less uniform [1]. Density is among the strongest yield drivers in the cannabis literature [2], yet past full canopy cover, more plants mostly add crowding.

Fewer plants need longer veg. Two trained plants can fill a 4 x 4; sixteen small ones fill it with almost no veg. Belgian yield trials used 12–20 plants per m² [3].

Crowding blocks airflow at the base and lets disease spread between plants.

## The numbers

| Tent | Area | Trained plants (11–19 L) | [Autos](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/autoflower.md) (11–15 L) | Sea of green (1–4 L) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 2 ft (60 x 60 cm) | 0.36 m² | 1–2 | 1–2 | 3–9 |
| 3 x 3 ft (90 x 90 cm) | 0.81 m² | 2–3 | 2–4 | 7–20 |
| 2 x 4 ft (60 x 120 cm) | 0.72 m² | 2 | 2–3 | 6–18 |
| 4 x 4 ft (120 x 120 cm) | 1.44 m² | 2–4 | 4–6 | 13–36 |
| 5 x 5 ft (150 x 150 cm) | 2.25 m² | 4–6 | 6–9 | 20–56 |

SOG column = 9–25 plants/m² × area.

## What to do

1. Check your legal plant limit.
2. Decide how long you can veg: long veg means fewer plants.
3. Pick a pot that fits the footprint with a few centimetres to spare.
4. Train each plant with [LST](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/lst.md) or a net so the canopy fills edge to edge.
5. Leave room to reach every plant and keep air moving under the canopy.

## Common mistakes

- Cramming in plants instead of training fewer.
- Running a sea of green from mixed seed, which [stretches](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/stretch.md) unevenly.
- Ignoring the plant limit because "it's only a tent".

## Follow-up questions

**How many plants for a sea of green?** A sea of green typically runs 9–25 small cannabis plants per square metre, about 1–2.3 per square foot, usually rooted clones of one cultivar in 1–4 L pots, flowered after 0–14 days of veg. Belgian yield trials used 12–20 plants per square metre. Check plant-count rules first: many places make SOG illegal for home growers.

**Is one big plant or several small ones better?** Several small plants and one big plant can fill the same canopy and yield about the same per square metre. Fewer plants need longer veg and more training; more plants finish sooner but need more seed or clones and crowd the air at the base. Higher density raised yield per area in research but lowered yield per plant and cannabinoid uniformity.

**How many autoflowers fit in a 4x4 tent?** About four to six autoflowers fit in a 4 x 4 ft (1.2 x 1.2 m) tent in 11–15 L (3–4 gal) pots, because autos stay smaller and can't be vegged longer to fill space. Use LST to spread each plant. Fewer, larger photoperiods would fill the same tent, but autos finish in 9–14 weeks with no light change.
