Sea of green is a cultivation method that relies on plant numbers rather than plant size. Many rooted clones are flipped to flower after very short veg, often a week or two, at densities of roughly 9-20 plants per square metre, so each plant grows into a single dominant cola and the canopy fills quickly.
In practice
SOG shortens the cycle and makes perpetual harvests practical, because the room spends little time in veg. It works best with uniform clones of a cultivar that finishes on one main cola; mixed seed plants give an uneven canopy. Lower branches are usually lollipopped, since they would only make small buds. Research on drug-type cannabis found that higher density increased yield per area but lowered the uniformity of cannabinoid content across plants.
Plant-count rules in many places make SOG impractical for home growers; check local rules.
Don't confuse with
- SCROG: few plants, long veg, screen-trained.
- Plant density: the measure; SOG is a method that uses high density.
Plant density is the number of plants per unit of canopy area; more plants raise yield per area up to a point but shorten veg and reduce uniformity.A dominant allele is one whose effect shows in the phenotype even when only one copy is present, masking the other (recessive) allele at that locus. The dense, elongated cluster of flowers that forms at the end of a stem or branch; the main cola tops the leader.A perpetual harvest staggers plants at different stages, usually with separate veg and flower spaces, so that harvests come every few weeks instead of once per cycle.Lollipopping removes the lower branches and small shoots on a plant, usually around the flip, so energy goes to the top buds and airflow improves underneath.A cannabinoid is any compound that binds the body's cannabinoid receptors or shares the typical cannabis terpenophenolic structure; the plant-made ones are phytocannabinoids such as THCA and CBDA.A plant count limit caps how many cannabis plants a person, household, patient or licence holder may have, and defines what counts as a plant.SCROG (screen of green) trains a few plants under a horizontal net, tucking shoots so the canopy forms a flat, evenly lit layer of many tops.Veg time is how long a photoperiod plant is kept in vegetative growth under long days before being flipped to flower, which largely sets its final size.
