Perpetual harvest

A perpetual harvest staggers plants at different stages, usually with separate veg and flower spaces, so that harvests come every few weeks instead of once per cycle.

A perpetual harvest (perpetual grow) is a schedule in which plants of different ages run side by side. Typically a mother or seed nursery supplies new plants, a veg area holds the next batch, and the flower room is refilled each time part of it is harvested. The grower harvests on a regular interval, for example every two to three weeks, rather than everything at once.

In practice

The usual setup is two spaces with separate light schedules: one for mothers, clones and veg under 18 h or more of light, and one for flower under about 12 h. Each time a batch in flower is harvested, the next batch from veg moves in. Autoflowers make a single-room perpetual possible, since they flower regardless of light schedule.

Benefits are steady supply and continuous use of the flower space. Costs are more equipment, more pest and pathogen risk from always having plants present, and less chance to deep-clean.

Don't confuse with

  • Perpetual flowering (autos): autos still finish once; perpetual refers to the schedule, not the plant.
  • SOG: often run perpetually, but SOG is a planting method.
