A hype strain is a name that everyone wants this season. Demand comes from photos, influencer posts, competition wins and scarcity, not necessarily from tested genetics.

In practice

Hype strains are typically crossed into everything within a year: every vendor offers "[hype name] x something". The original may be a single clone-only cut; much of what is sold under the name is unrelated or a one-generation cross. Expect wide variation between packs and between dispensary jars carrying the same label.

To judge one, ignore the name and ask for the evidence: parents, generations, tester reports, herm rate, lab results from more than one source. Treat potency numbers on the label with suspicion.

Don't confuse with

  • Elite cut: a proven individual, which may or may not be hyped.
  • Classic: a line or cut with a long, documented track record.

Myth check

"Everything tastes the same now." GenetixBay position: the evidence shows commercial cannabis converging on a few chemical profiles (Smith et al. 2022), driven partly by hype cycles that cross the same few cuts into everything. See why everything tastes the same.
