Bag appeal

Bag appeal is how good flower looks in the bag or jar, frost, colour, density and trim, which sells cannabis but does not measure its quality.

Bag appeal is the visual impression of cured flower: trichome coverage ("frost"), colour, bud density and shape, and how neatly it is trimmed. It is the single biggest driver of retail price.

In practice

Breeders select for bag appeal because it photographs well and sells. A grower can raise it with a careful dry and cure, gentle handling and a good trim. It says little about aroma after grinding, smoke quality, cannabinoid and terpene content, or how the flower was dried.

Don't confuse with

  • Quality: aroma, flavour, smoke, cure, freshness and reported effects. A plain-looking jar can beat a beautiful one.
  • Potency: frost is suggestive but not a reliable predictor of total cannabinoids.

Myth check

"Frosty and purple means better." GenetixBay position: bag appeal is not quality. Purple colour comes from anthocyanins, which depend on genetics and cool temperatures and do not add potency or terpenes. The founder admits he is "a sucker for any red strain", which proves the point: looks are a preference, not a measurement. See purple stems and leaves.
