Home grow means cultivating cannabis at a private residence for your own use, not for sale. Where it is legal, it usually comes with conditions: a maximum number of plants per person or household, rules on where plants may be (indoors, outdoors, visible from the street), security and child-access requirements, a minimum age, and sometimes landlord or local consent.

In practice

A household in a place allowing four plants per residence can grow four, whether they are seedlings or in flower, unless the rule distinguishes stages. Some places allow home grow for registered medical patients only, or set different limits for adult use. Others ban it completely even where retail sales are legal. Growing more than the limit, selling home-grown cannabis, or giving it away in exchange for anything of value can turn a legal hobby into a serious offence.

GenetixBay's position is that growing your own is the most direct way to know what you are consuming: how it was grown, dried and cured, and that it was not irradiated. That is an argument for legal home grow, never for breaking local law.

Rules differ by country, state, province and city, and change often. This is a general definition, not legal advice: check local rules.

Don't confuse with

  • Personal cultivation limit: the specific numeric cap that defines a legal home grow.
  • Licensed production: commercial growing under a licence, with tracking and testing.
  • Decriminalisation: reduced penalties, which may not make growing legal.
