A possession limit is the legal maximum quantity of cannabis an individual may have. Laws often set different limits for public possession and for storage at home, and convert other products (edibles, concentrates, seeds, plants) into "dried flower equivalents".
In practice
Common limits are written in grams (for example around 30 g of dried flower in some places) or in ounces (1 oz in others), but the figures, the equivalences and the treatment of home-grown harvest differ widely. A legal home grow can produce more than the possession limit allows you to keep, so some laws carve out an exception for cannabis stored where it was grown; others do not. Exceeding the limit can be treated as intent to supply.
Rules differ by country, state, province and city, and change often. This is a general definition, not legal advice: check local rules.
Don't confuse with
- Personal cultivation limit: how many plants you may grow.
- Purchase limit: how much a store may sell you in one transaction.
