Dank

Dank is slang for strong-smelling, high-quality flower; originally it meant damp and musty, which in real cannabis is a warning sign.

Dank is slang for good cannabis, especially flower with a strong, pungent aroma. The everyday English meaning is damp, cold and musty.

In practice

When a grower calls a jar dank, they mean pungent and well made. The original meaning is worth remembering, because a genuinely damp or musty smell in flower is a defect: it can mean the buds were dried too slowly, sealed too wet, or have mould. A good cure smells clean and sharp, not like a cellar.

Don't confuse with

  • Loud: strong aroma; near-synonym.
  • Musty or hay smell: musty points to excess moisture or mould; hay points to drying too fast or bacterial breakdown. Neither is dank in the slang sense, and a cure will never fully fix a bad dry.
