Short answer

Homegrown cannabis is usually harsh because it was dried too fast, over-dried, or smoked before a proper cure. It isn't harsh because you didn't flush. Pre-harvest flushing is a Myth, and a harmful one (House position). Dry slowly for 7–14 days, then cure for at least 2 weeks. Supported.

Why

Flushing doesn't change the smoke. Controlled studies found no improvement in flower quality from withdrawing nutrients before harvest, and longer withdrawal tended to cut yield [1][2]. Cannabis stores what it takes up in its tissue. Starving it in the last weeks takes food away just as it is packing on its final weight and resin.

The dry decides most of it. Air-drying shifts the oil away from volatile monoterpenes [3], and a fast, warm dry crisps the outside while the core stays wet. The result is harsh, grassy or hay-like smoke. A cure never fixes a bad dry (House position).

Moisture has to be right. ASTM sets water activity 0.55–0.65 for dried flower [4]. Too wet and the bud burns badly and risks mould. Too dry and it burns hot and fast.

The numbers

Stage Target
Dry 7–14 days, 15–21 °C (60–70 °F), 55–62% RH, dark
Ready to jar Stems snap; sealed jar reads a stable 58–65% RH after 12–24 h
Cure Water activity from 0.62–0.65 falling slowly to 0.55–0.58
Cure length 2 weeks minimum; 4–8 weeks common
Late-flower feeding Taper nitrogen; keep P, K, Ca, Mg and micros fed

What to do

  1. Check a jar: seal it for 12–24 hours and read the hygrometer.
  2. If it reads above 65%, dry the buds further. If it reads below 55%, add a fresh bud for a day.
  3. Cure for at least 2 more weeks, burping as needed, and let the reading drift down.
  4. Next run, dry slower: cooler, darker, and with no fan blowing on the buds.
  5. Keep feeding to the end, tapering nitrogen rather than flushing.
  6. Rule out pests or mould on the buds as well.

Common mistakes

  • Blaming nutrients and flushing next time.
  • Drying in 3 days in summer heat.
  • Smoking straight off the drying line.
  • Expecting a long cure to rescue a hay smell.

Follow-up questions

Will flushing make my weed smoother?

Flushing will not make your weed smoother. Controlled studies found no gain in flower quality, minerals or cannabinoids from a pre-harvest flush, and longer nutrient withdrawal tended to cut yield. Cannabis stores what it takes up, and plain water at the end does not wash it out. Smoothness comes from plant health, a slow dry and a proper cure. Taper nitrogen instead.

Does a longer cure make smoke smoother?

A longer cure is widely reported to make cannabis smoke smoother, within reason, as moisture evens out through the bud and aroma settles. At least 2 weeks is the minimum and 4–8 weeks is common, but the chemistry is not well studied. A cure cannot rescue a 3-day hot dry: that harshness and any hay smell stay with the flower.

Can wet buds be harsh?

Yes, buds that are still too wet burn unevenly, go out, and give a heavy, harsh smoke, and they risk mould in the jar. Check that small stems snap and that a sealed sample jar reads a stable 58–65% RH after 12–24 hours. If a jar climbs above about 65–68%, take the buds out and dry them further.
