Short answer

Set up a grow tent in this order: power, frame, air, light, circulation, test. Hang the carbon filter high with the exhaust fan pulling through it, open low intakes on the far side, hang the light level over the canopy, mount power off the floor, then run the empty tent for 48 hours before any plant goes in. Grower practice. Check that home growing is legal where you live first.

Why

Most first-grow problems are climate problems that existed before the seed: hot tents, humid nights, leaks. A 48-hour empty run finds them while nothing can die.

Air goes in before the light because the light is the heat source. Exhaust high (hot air rises) with intake low on the opposite side sweeps the whole tent. Pulling through the filter keeps negative pressure, so smell can't escape.

The light should match the canopy footprint: yield rises with canopy PPFD [1], and corners starve if the fixture is off-centre.

Stray night light can delay flowering [2], so seal zips and ports. Still, humid air is where mould starts [3]; a clip fan fixes that.

Overloaded circuits and cords cause most home electrical fires [4].

The numbers

Item Target
Exhaust ~1 tent volume per minute, +25–50 % for filter and ducting
Passive intake ≈ 2–3 × exhaust duct area, low, opposite side
Light start height 45–60 cm (18–24 in) over seedlings, dimmed 25–40 %
Leaf-level air speed 0.3–1.0 m/s (60–200 ft/min)
Circuit load under 80 % of rating
Empty test 48 h, lights-on and lights-off logged

What to do

  1. Check the circuit and plan an RCD/GFCI-protected outlet.
  2. Build the frame on a level floor; add a tray or mat.
  3. Hang the carbon filter high; connect filter → duct → fan → outlet; seal joints.
  4. Open low intakes on the far side; close every other port.
  5. Hang the light level and centred on rated hangers.
  6. Clip a fan above the canopy, blowing across, not down.
  7. Mount the power strip and controllers high; drip-loop every cable.
  8. Place a thermo-hygrometer at canopy height, shaded.
  9. Run 48 hours on the real timer; check walls, leaks, plugs.

Common mistakes

  • Plants in before the empty test.
  • Fan pushing into the filter.
  • Power strip on the floor.
  • No headroom for the stretch.

Follow-up questions

Where should the carbon filter and fan go in a tent?

The carbon filter goes high in the grow tent, where warm, smelly air collects, with the inline exhaust fan after it so the fan pulls air through the filter: filter, duct, fan, outlet. That keeps the tent under negative pressure. Open the passive intakes low on the opposite side, with about 2–3 times the exhaust duct's area, and close all other ports.

How high should I hang the light when setting up?

When setting up a grow tent, hang the LED level over the centre of the canopy area on rated adjustable hangers, starting at about 45–60 cm (18–24 in) above seedlings and dimmed to 25–40 %. Then set height and dimming by the fixture's PPFD map or a quantum meter, not by a fixed distance, and leave room above the plants for the post-flip stretch.

Why run an empty grow tent for 48 hours?

Running an empty grow tent for 48 hours with lights and fans on their timers shows its real climate before plants are at risk. Log temperature and RH at lights-on and lights-off, check the walls bow inwards, look for light leaks in the dark, and feel every plug for heat. Fix the room first; plants won't fix it for you.
