Short answer
Yes, you can mix soil and coco. Buffered coco lightens a heavy potting mix and holds water and air at the same time. Decide which system the blend behaves like: mostly soil, water at pH 6.2–6.8 and feed at soil strength; mostly coco, run pH 5.8–6.2 and feed every watering. Grower practice; the coir chemistry behind it is established.
Why
Coir pith is a peat substitute with good water holding and air space, and it has been used in commercial potting mixes for decades [1].
Raw coir carries potassium and sodium from the husk and has modest exchange capacity [1]. Feed it calcium and it swaps calcium onto its sites and releases potassium, so unbuffered coco shows early calcium and magnesium shortages. Washed, buffered coco avoids this [2].
The two media feed differently. Potting mix brings compost and a starter charge and buffers pH. Coco brings no nutrients and buffers pH weakly. A blend sits between the two, and the larger share sets the rules.
Organic feeding works in coir blends too, once nitrogen supply is adequate [3].
The numbers
| Blend (coco share) | Behaves like | Irrigation pH | Feeding |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10–30% | Soil | 6.2–6.8 | Starter charge, then soil strength, EC 0.8–1.6 mS/cm |
| 40–50% | Mostly soil | 6.2–6.5 | Starter charge, then feed every second watering |
| 60% and up | Coco | 5.8–6.2 | Full mineral feed every watering, EC 1.2–2.4, 10–20% runoff |
Add 20–30% perlite through any blend that will be hand-watered.
What to do
- Use washed, buffered coco, or rinse to runoff EC below about 0.5 mS/cm and buffer it.
- Pick your blend and decide up front whether you'll run it as soil or as coco.
- Mix evenly and add perlite through the whole pot.
- Check runoff pH and EC a few times in the first three weeks.
- Adjust: if lower leaves pale early, the starter charge was diluted, so start feeding sooner.
Common mistakes
- Raw, unbuffered coco, then blaming the lights for calcium spots (that's a Myth; coco, RO water and the cultivar drive it).
- Running a mostly-coco blend like soil, with plain-water days.
- Assuming the blend still has a full starter charge after diluting the soil by half.
