Restock

A restock is a new batch of a previously sold seed line; it may come from different parent plants than the original batch.

Draft: awaiting expert reviewUpdated

A restock is new stock of something that sold out. With seed, that means a new batch was made, and a new batch is a new set of pollinations.

In practice

If the breeder used the same mother and the same father (kept as clones or stored pollen), a restock can match the original closely. If a new male was chosen, or the line was remade from different plants, the restock is effectively a different population under the same name. Growers who loved the first batch and hated the second are often seeing exactly that.

Ask whether a restock used the same parents and when the seed was made. Batch-level records, such as a separate GenetixBay batch ID for each production run, let growers compare batches instead of arguing about names.

Don't confuse with

  • Remake: an openly new version of an old cross; at least it admits the change.
  • Drop: the first release.
