Rosin can be pressed from two kinds of starting material. Flower rosin is pressed directly from dried flower: simpler, but it carries more plant lipids, chlorophyll and other compounds from the plant tissue into the oil, and it usually has a lower yield per gram of resin present. Hash rosin is pressed from hash, most often ice water hash or dry sift, which has already had most plant matter removed. Hash rosin made from fresh frozen material is live rosin.

In practice

Among solventless makers, hash rosin is widely considered the higher-grade product: cleaner, more consistent texture and better flavour. Flower rosin remains popular with home consumers because it needs only the flower. In both cases the outcome depends mainly on the starting material: rosin can't improve poor hash or poorly grown flower. GenetixBay defines the products only and gives no pressing settings.

Don't confuse with

  • Live rosin: hash rosin made from fresh frozen material.
  • Pressed hash: compressed solid hash, not an extracted oil.
  • Resin (live or cured): solvent-based extracts.
