The grey market is cannabis supply that sits between the fully legal and fully illegal: unlicensed sellers operating where possession or use is legal or tolerated, businesses exploiting gaps between laws, or channels whose legal status is unclear. The term "legacy market" is often used for growers and sellers who predate legal licensing.

In practice

Grey-market products have no mandatory testing, labelling or recalls, so contamination, potency and identity are unknown, and buying or selling them can be an offence depending on where you are. GenetixBay never encourages buying from illegal or unlicensed sources.

The founder's opinion is that the craft standards of many small, pre-legalisation growers were higher than those of today's industrial model. The constructive response is to support craft production within the law and to grow your own where home grow is legal.

Rules differ by country, state, province and city, and change often. This is a general definition, not legal advice: check local rules.

Don't confuse with

  • Black market: clearly illegal supply.
  • Licensed craft: small-batch production inside the legal system.
