Beans is common slang for cannabis seeds. "Popping beans" means germinating them, and "bean count" is how many seeds are in a pack.
In practice
"I popped 12 beans of that line and got 11 up" means 12 seeds were germinated and 11 emerged, a germination rate of about 92%. Growers swap and trade beans, store them cool and dry, and rate seed lots by germination, vigour and uniformity. A healthy seed is fully formed, hard, and usually grey to brown with a darker pattern; pale, soft or crushed seeds often fail.
Storage matters more than age alone: seed kept dry and cold, sealed against moisture, can stay viable for many years, while seed kept warm and humid can fail within a couple of years. See seed viability and storage.
Don't confuse with
- Achene: the botanical name for what growers call a seed (seed plus fruit wall).
- Bagseed: one source of beans, but a specific, untrusted one.
- Clones: plants started from cuttings, not seed.
The dry, single-seeded fruit of cannabis that growers call a seed; a hard shell (pericarp plus seed coat) encloses one embryo and does not split open.Germination is the stage where a viable seed absorbs water, splits its shell and pushes out a root (radicle), usually within 1-7 days at 20-30 °C.A seed run is a dedicated grow in which selected parents are crossed to produce a batch of seed, as opposed to growing for flower.Bagseed is a seed found in purchased flower, of unknown parentage and often the product of accidental pollination, including by intersex plants.Regs is slang for regular seed: seed from a true male and female cross that gives roughly half male and half female plants.Fems is slang for feminised seed, made with pollen from a chemically sex-reversed female so nearly every plant grows female. In cannabis slang, a seed bank is a vendor that sells seed from one or many breeders; it is not the same as a conservation genebank.
