Short answer
In flower, open the tent during the dark period only if the room around it is dark too, and only briefly. Stray light as dim as 2 µmol/m²/s delayed flowering in hemp [1], and a conference report saw delays in sensitive cannabis at 0.01 µmol/m²/s [2]. If you must work, use a dim green headlamp for a few minutes. In veg it doesn't matter. Supported.
Why
Photoperiod cannabis measures the length of the uninterrupted night. Phytochrome in the leaf tracks red and far-red light; a pulse of light mid-night resets the count. Commercial growers use exactly this "night break" on purpose to keep mothers vegetative [3].
Induction is most fragile in the first two weeks after the flip. It needs consecutive short days, and returning plants to long-day conditions pulled the forming inflorescence apart in one study [4].
Green light is less active on phytochrome than red, but not inactive. Dim and brief is the rule (Grower practice).
The numbers
| Situation | Risk |
|---|---|
| Veg (18/6, 20/4, 24/0) | none: open freely |
| Flower, dark room, tent opened | low |
| Flower, dim green headlamp, a few minutes | low (Grower practice) |
| Flower, room lights on, tent opened | can delay flowering in sensitive cultivars |
| Stray light that delayed flowering | ~2 µmol/m²/s (hemp) [1]; 0.01 µmol/m²/s (sensitive cannabis) [2] |
| Most sensitive window | first ~2 weeks after the flip [4] |
What to do
- Do your daily check during lights-on.
- Turn off room lights before unzipping at night.
- Use a dim green headlamp, aimed low, for minutes, not an hour.
- Fix the cause of night visits: put pumps, timers and sensors where you can reach them without opening the tent.
- After the flip, sit in the dark tent for five minutes once; anything you can see is a leak.
Common mistakes
- "One minute won't matter", every night.
- A bright green work light left on.
- Opening the tent with the room lights on.
- Phone screens and controller LEDs inside the tent.
