A jeweler's loupe is a small folding magnifying lens built for close inspection of gems. Growers use loupes, and increasingly cheap pocket digital microscopes, to look at trichome heads, early pre-flowers, anthers on suspected intersex plants, and tiny pests such as mites and thrips.
In practice
Magnification matters:
- 10-20x: enough for sexing pre-flowers and spotting spider mites.
- 30x: borderline for trichome colour; you see heads but not reliably cloudy versus clear.
- 60-100x: comfortable for judging clear, cloudy and amber heads, and for broad and russet mites, which are near-invisible below this.
Tips: steady your hand against the plant or use a clip-on stand; use daylight or a neutral white torch rather than the grow light, because purple-pink LED light makes heads look misleadingly amber; check bract trichomes, not sugar leaves.
A phone-attached clip lens or USB microscope lets you photograph heads for a grow journal and compare day to day, which makes the call far more objective.
Don't confuse with
- Magnifying glass: usually 2-5x, too weak for trichomes.
- Microscope: higher magnification, normally bench-mounted.
- Trichome ripeness: what you judge with the loupe.
Trichome heads are the bulbous resin-filled tops of capitate glandular trichomes, where cannabis makes and stores nearly all its cannabinoids and terpenes; they are the raw material of hash. The first individual flowers that form at stem nodes during late vegetative growth, letting a grower tell male from female before full flowering. In cannabis growing, a plant (usually female) that develops both pistillate and staminate flowers or anthers; botanists call it intersex or monoecious expression.Tetranychus urticae, the commonest cannabis mite indoors: a 0.5 mm sap-feeder that stipples leaves pale and spins webbing, breeding fastest in hot, dry rooms. The maturity of glandular trichome heads, read by colour under magnification: clear (immature), cloudy or milky (mature), then amber (ageing).Aculops cannabicola, a microscopic eriophyid mite specific to cannabis that causes upward leaf curl, bronzing and dull, greasy-looking trichomes. An LED (light-emitting diode) grow light uses solid-state diodes to produce light; modern fixtures are the most efficient grow lights, at roughly 2.5–3 µmol/J.A hair-like outgrowth of the plant's skin; in cannabis the glandular types make and store the resin holding cannabinoids and terpenes. The span of days, often one to two weeks, in which a cannabis plant is ripe enough to cut, judged mainly by trichome head colour and bud development.
