Dialled in (US "dialed in") means a grow has been tuned until it performs consistently: environment, light, feeding and irrigation are matched to the cultivar and the room, and results repeat.
In practice
Getting dialled in is a cycle of measuring and adjusting: logging temperature, RH and VPD through the day, measuring PPFD across the canopy, tracking feed and runoff EC and pH, and recording dry weight and quality at the end. A dialled-in room hits its targets, for example about 1.2-1.5 kPa VPD in mid flower and an even canopy at the planned PPFD, without daily firefighting.
A setup is dialled in for one cultivar at a time. Cultivars differ in nutrient demand, Ca/Mg use, stretch and light tolerance, so a new cut usually needs a few runs. "Test your cultivar" is the GenetixBay approach: record what you change and what it does.
Don't confuse with
- Maxed out: pushing every input to the limit. Dialled in is about consistency, not extremes.
Relative humidity is the water vapour in air as a percentage of what it could hold at that temperature, so the same RH dries plants differently at different temperatures.Vapour pressure deficit: how much more water vapour the air could hold at its temperature, in kPa; it is the main environmental driver of transpiration.Photosynthetic photon flux density: the number of PAR photons landing on one square metre each second, in µmol/m²/s; the standard measure of light intensity at the canopy.Runoff is the water or nutrient solution that drains out of the bottom of a container after irrigation; growers test it to see what is happening in the root zone.EC (electrical conductivity) measures how well a solution conducts electricity, a proxy for total dissolved salts; growers read it in mS/cm to gauge nutrient strength.pH measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is on a 0–14 scale; in growing it controls nutrient uptake, with soil best near 6.0–7.0 and hydro 5.5–6.5.An even canopy is one where all main tops sit at roughly the same height, so each receives similar light intensity and buds develop more uniformly. The stretch is the rapid increase in height in the first two to three weeks after switching to flower, when many cultivars grow 1.5 to 3 times taller.Crop steering adjusts irrigation timing, volume and dryback, along with climate, to push plants towards vegetative growth or generative (flowering) growth.A grow journal is a dated record of a grow, with photos, environment, feeding, problems and results, used to learn, share and prove what happened.
