Choosing your growing system: soil, coco, rockwool or hydro

Choose by how much attention and measurement you can give, not by yield claims. Soil and living soil forgive mistakes for days; coco and drip need daily feeding; DWC, NFT and aeroponics grow fast but can lose roots within hours if a pump or air supply fails. No controlled study shows one system out-yielding the others when light and climate are equal.

Short answer. Pick the system whose failure mode you can live with. Soil and living soil buffer mistakes for days; coco and rockwool for 12–48 hours; DWC for 2–12 hours if the air stops; NFT and LPA for 1–4 hours; HPA for tens of minutes [5]. Yield follows light, climate and the grower far more than the system: a meta-analysis of cannabis yield factors found light and plant density among the strongest drivers [1], and yield rose linearly with light in controlled trials [2]. There is no controlled study showing one system out-yields another at equal light. Beginners: soil or coco. First hydro: DWC or Kratky.

Side-by-side

System Forgiveness (time-to-harm on actuator failure) [5] Daily attention Measurement needed Cost Typical pH Best for
Soil (bottled feed) Days Low pH of water; occasional runoff EC Low 6.2–6.8 First grow
Living soil Days Low Moisture Low–medium 6.3–7.0 (not controlled) Low-input, organic
Bottom-water / wick Days Very low Tray level; occasional top EC Low Medium-dependent Busy growers, soil
Coco (hand or drip) 12–36 h Daily pH, EC, runoff Low–medium 5.8–6.2 Fast growth, hydro-like control
Rockwool 24–48 h Daily VWC/EC probe Medium 5.5–6.0 Precision, crop steering
Ebb & flow Days Low–medium pH, EC, reservoir Medium 5.6–6.2 Many small plants, SOG
Recirculating drip 12–36 h Medium pH, EC, runoff, refresh Medium Per medium Water/nutrient saving
Drain-to-waste + steering 12–36 h Medium–high VWC/EC probe Medium–high Per medium Advanced/commercial
Kratky n/a (no pump) Low Level, EC, water temp Very low 5.6–6.2 Hydro on a budget, autos
DWC 2–12 h (air) Medium pH, EC, water temp Low 5.6–6.0 Fast veg, first hydro
RDWC 2–12 h (air) Medium pH, EC, water temp, flows Medium–high 5.6–6.0 Multiple large plants
NFT 1–3 h Medium Flow, pH, EC Medium 5.6–6.0 Clones, mothers, small plants
LPA 1–4 h Medium Chamber RH, pH, EC Medium 5.6–6.0 Aero without the risk of HPA
HPA Tens of minutes to hours High Pressure, RH, battery High 5.6–6.0 Experienced tinkerers
Fogponics Hours (as sole method) Medium Tank level, EC Low n/a Supplement only

Decision guide

  1. Will you be away for 2+ days without automation? → Soil, living soil or bottom-watering.
  2. Can you check pH and EC daily? → Coco or DWC become options.
  3. Is your power or water supply unreliable? → Avoid NFT and HPA; prefer media-based systems.
  4. Hot room in summer (reservoir above 24 °C / 75 °F)? → Media-based systems, or budget for a chiller [4].
  5. Many small plants (SOG)? → Ebb & flow or coco drip.
  6. Want to steer for yield and quality with data? → Rockwool or coco on drain-to-waste with a VWC/EC probe.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing hydro "for yield" and then running it in a hot, poorly lit room.
  • Mixing system advice: soil pH and feed schedules in coco, or hydro-strength EC in soil.
  • Building aeroponics before mastering a forgiving system.

Evidence

Failure-margin times are engineering estimates from GenetixBay's Jardin designbeing reviewed [5]. The dominance of light and density over system choice is Supported [1][2]. Root-disease risk in warm recirculating systems is Established [4]. Comparative yield claims between systems are Grower practice.
