# Choosing your growing system: soil, coco, rockwool or hydro

> Choose by how much attention and measurement you can give, not by yield claims. Soil and living soil forgive mistakes for days; coco and drip need daily feeding; DWC, NFT and aeroponics grow fast but can lose roots within hours if a pump or air supply fails. No controlled study shows one system out-yielding the others when light and climate are equal.

## Questions and answers

**What is the best growing system for a beginner?** Soil or coco is the best growing system for most beginner cannabis growers. Soil buffers mistakes for days and needs little more than pH-checked water, while coco gives hydro-like speed but needs daily feeding with pH and EC checks. For a first hydroponic grow, [deep water culture](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/dwc.md) or the pump-free Kratky method is the usual starting point.

**Is hydro better than soil for cannabis?** Hydro is not proven better than soil for cannabis. No controlled study shows one system out-yielding another at equal light and climate, and research points to light and [plant density](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/plant-density.md) as the strongest yield drivers. Hydro trades forgiveness for speed: soil buffers mistakes for days, while deep water culture can lose roots in 2–12 hours if the air supply stops.

**Which system gives the biggest yield?** No growing system reliably gives the biggest cannabis yield on its own. A meta-analysis of cannabis yield factors found light and plant density among the strongest drivers, and controlled trials showed yield rising linearly with light. Claims that one system out-yields another are grower practice, not research, so invest in lighting and climate before chasing a 'high-yield' system.

**Coco or soil?** Choosing coco or soil comes down to attention. Soil forgives mistakes for days, runs at pH 6.2–6.8 and needs only occasional runoff checks, making it the safer first grow. Coco runs at pH 5.8–6.2, needs daily feeding with pH and EC checks, and can harm plants within 12–36 hours if irrigation stops, but rewards that attention with fast, hydro-like growth.

**Which hydroponic system is easiest?** Kratky and deep water culture are the easiest hydroponic systems for cannabis. Kratky needs no pump, so nothing can fail, though you still check level, EC and water temperature. Deep water culture is cheap and fast but needs pH, EC and temperature checks and loses roots within 2–12 hours if the air stops. Ebb and flow is also forgiving, since its media buffer pump failures for days.

**Short answer.** Pick the system whose **failure mode you can live with**. Soil and [living soil](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/living-soil.md) buffer mistakes for **days**; coco and rockwool for **12–48 hours**; DWC for **2–12 hours** if the air stops; [NFT](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/nft.md) and [LPA](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/aeroponics.md) for **1–4 hours**; [HPA](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hpa.md) for **tens of minutes** [5]. Yield follows **light, climate and the grower** far more than the system: a meta-analysis of cannabis yield factors found light and plant density among the strongest drivers [1], and yield rose linearly with light in controlled trials [2]. There is no controlled study showing one system out-yields another at equal light. Beginners: **soil or coco**. First hydro: **DWC or Kratky**.

## Decision guide

1. **Will you be away for 2+ days without automation?** → Soil, living soil or [bottom-watering](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/bottom-watering.md).
2. **Can you check pH and EC daily?** → Coco or DWC become options.
3. **Is your power or water supply unreliable?** → Avoid NFT and HPA; prefer media-based systems.
4. **Hot room in summer (reservoir above 24 °C / 75 °F)?** → Media-based systems, or budget for a chiller [4].
5. **Many small plants (SOG)?** → Ebb & flow or coco drip.
6. **Want to steer for yield and quality with data?** → Rockwool or coco on [drain-to-waste](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/drain-to-waste.md) with a VWC/EC probe.

## Common mistakes

- Choosing hydro "for yield" and then running it in a hot, poorly lit room.
- Mixing system advice: soil pH and [feed schedules](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/feed-chart.md) in coco, or hydro-strength [EC in](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/input-ec.md) soil.
- Building aeroponics before mastering a forgiving system.
