Likely causes, most likely first

Ranked for this sign on its own. Your stage, medium and readings change the order, so run the checker for your plant.

  1. PossibleHop latent viroid (dudding)

DiseaseAct within a day or twoRead: Hop latent viroid (HLVd, 'dudding') and other cannabis viruses

Fix: No cure in a plant. Test mothers (roots and leaves) by RT-PCR or RT-qPCR, discard positives, disinfect tools with 10% bleach or heat (alcohol and peroxide don't inactivate it), and use meristem tissue culture to rescue valuable genetics. Don't take cuttings from stunted plants.

Recovery: Negative tests on new mothers; no more duds in the next cycle.

    How to confirm it
    • Lab test for hop latent viroid (RT-PCR or RT-qPCR). Send root and leaf samples (roots detect HLVd earlier in young plants) to a lab offering HLVd RT-PCR or RT-qPCR. Test mother plants and any stunted plant among healthy siblings. A positive plant cannot be cured; tissue culture of meristem tips can rescue genetics.
    • Compare with siblings or the same cut. Put the affected plant beside siblings or clones of the same cut in the same conditions. A trait shared by all of a cultivar (purple stems, foxtailing, pale colour) is genetic; a problem on one plant points to its roots, a virus or its genetics; a problem on every cultivar points to the environment or feed.
  2. PossibleNot enough light

LightLow urgencyRead: Stretchy, leggy cannabis: a differential

Fix: Bring PPFD to stage targets: seedlings 100-300, veg 300-700, flower 800-1,200 µmol/m²/s. Yield rose linearly with PPFD from 120 to 1,800 in a controlled trial. Lower canopy buds under ~300-400 µmol/m²/s make larf: thin or lollipop the shaded bottom, or train flat.

Recovery: New internodes shorten within a week; denser buds on the following weeks of growth.

    How to confirm it
    • Measure PPFD at the canopy top. Use a quantum (PAR) meter, or a calibrated phone app as a rough guide, at the top leaves in a 5-9 point grid. Compare with the stage target: seedlings 100-300, veg 300-700, flower 800-1,200 µmol/m²/s at ambient CO2. Bleaching and taco at the top above ~1,100 point to light; stretch below ~300 in veg points to too little.
  3. PossibleHeat stress

EnvironmentAct within a day or twoRead: Heat and light stress: taco leaves, bleaching and foxtails

Fix: Bring canopy leaf temperature under about 30 °C (86 °F): more exhaust (one tent air exchange every 1-3 minutes), raise or dim the light, add canopy airflow (0.3-1.0 m/s), keep RH so VPD stays 1.0-1.5 kPa, water well. Above ~30 °C photosynthesis falls unless CO2 and light are high.

Recovery: Leaves flatten within a day; no new foxtails or crisping.

    How to confirm it
    • IR leaf temperature at the canopy top. Point an IR thermometer at the top leaves under the light (5-10 cm away, emissivity 0.95) and at shaded leaves. Leaf temperature above about 30 °C (86 °F) at the top only points to heat or radiant load; leaf VPD can be calculated from leaf temperature and RH.
    • Check temperature and RH at canopy height with a calibrated sensor. Put a calibrated sensor (salt test: a sealed bag with damp table salt reads 75% RH after 8-12 hours) at canopy height, out of direct light, and log for 24 hours including lights-off. Look for lights-off RH spikes and dew point.
  4. Less likelyGeneral underfeeding (whole feed too weak)

NutrientDeal with it this weekRead: Building a cannabis feed by stage: ppm targets per element and how to hit them

Fix: Raise the whole feed in steps of about 0.2-0.3 mS/cm toward the stage target (veg 1.2-1.8, flower 1.6-2.2 mS/cm in coco and hydro). Stop any 'flush': plain water for weeks starves the plant, and pre-harvest flushing is a myth that costs yield.

Recovery: Colour deepens and growth speeds up within a week; runoff EC tracks input.

    How to confirm it
    • Measure runoff EC against input EC. Water to 10-20% runoff, collect the runoff in a clean cup and measure EC of both with a calibrated meter (1.413 mS/cm standard). Runoff more than ~0.5 mS/cm above input means salt build-up; well below input means the plant is hungry or you are over-leaching. In hydro, compare reservoir EC with the EC you mixed.
    • Measure input pH and root-zone (runoff or reservoir) pH. Calibrate the meter with fresh pH 7 and pH 4 buffers, then measure the mixed feed and the runoff (containers) or reservoir (hydro). Soil and living soil should sit at 6.0-7.0, coco, rockwool and peat mixes at 5.5-6.5, hydro at 5.5-6.2. Track 3+ readings; one reading is not a trend.
  5. Less likelyToo much nitrogen

Too much of somethingLow urgencyRead: Nitrogen (N) in cannabis: nitrate vs ammonium, deficiency, toxicity and targets

Fix: Cut feed N by 20-30% (or the whole feed EC by ~0.3-0.5 mS/cm); for a heavy overdose in containers, run a root-zone flush with pH-adjusted, quarter-strength feed to 20-30% runoff. In flower, taper N while keeping P, K, Ca, Mg, S and micros fed.

Recovery: New leaves come in lighter green and flat within 5-7 days; clawed leaves relax partly.

    • Lift the pot and check moisture at depth. Lift the pot right after a full watering to learn its wet weight, then lift before each watering. Water when it is clearly lighter (about half the added water gone). Push a finger or a moisture probe 5 cm (2 in) down. Heavy for 3-4+ days with droop: overwatering. Very light with limp papery leaves: thirst.
  6. Less likelyCO2 depleted in a sealed room without enrichment

EnvironmentLow urgencyRead: CO₂ enrichment: when it pays, how much, and how to stay safe

Fix: Exchange air (exhaust with passive or active intake) or enrich to 800-1,200 ppm during lights-on when PPFD is above ~900 µmol/m²/s and the room is sealed.

Recovery: Lights-on CO2 holds above ~400 ppm; growth rate returns.

    How to confirm it
    • Measure CO2 during the light period. Read a CO2 monitor at canopy height through the light period. A sealed room without enrichment can fall below 300-350 ppm and stall growth; enriched rooms should hold 800-1,200 ppm. Keep occupied spaces below the 5,000 ppm workplace limit.

Look for

Loose, open flowers with long internodes, especially on lower branches; note PPFD there..
