# Silicon (Si) for cannabis: beneficial, not essential, and how to dose it

> Silicon is a beneficial element, not an essential one. It strengthens cell walls and reduces abiotic and some disease stress in many crops, and cannabis does take it up, but cannabis-specific evidence for yield or quality benefits is thin. If you use it, add potassium silicate first to the water at about 20–50 mg/L Si, before other nutrients, and correct pH afterwards because it is strongly alkaline.

## Questions and answers

**Does cannabis need silica?** Cannabis does not need silica to complete its life cycle; silicon is a beneficial element, not an essential one. In many crops it strengthens cell walls and reduces drought, salt, metal and some fungal stress, and research shows cannabis does take it up and deposit it. No controlled cannabis trial has shown silicon raises flower yield or [cannabinoids](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabinoid.md), so use is grower practice.

**How much silica to add to a hydro reservoir?** Grower practice for a cannabis hydro reservoir is about 20-50 mg/L silicon from potassium silicate. Staying below roughly 56 mg/L silicon avoids polymerisation, where silica gels out of solution. Remember that potassium silicate also supplies potassium, so count it in the feed, and expect the strongly alkaline stock, around [pH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ph.md) 11-12, to raise reservoir pH.

**Why do I add silica first when mixing nutrients?** Silica goes in first, into plain water, because potassium silicate is strongly alkaline and adding it to a mixed, acidic nutrient solution creates local pH spikes that precipitate calcium and iron, while silicic acid polymerises at low pH. Stir it in, wait a few minutes, add the [A and B](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/a-b-nutrient.md) nutrients, then adjust pH last.

**Does silicon prevent [powdery mildew](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/powdery-mildew.md) in cannabis?** Silicon preventing powdery mildew in cannabis is plausible but unproven. Soluble silicon suppresses powdery mildew well in cucurbits and cereals, but no cannabis trial has tested it, so the evidence for cannabis is contested. At best silicon is a preventive aid, and it will not rescue an existing outbreak.

**Silica ppm SiO2 vs Si, what's the difference?** Silica labels often quote SiO2 rather than elemental silicon, and silicon is only 0.467 of the SiO2 weight. So 100 mg/L SiO2 equals about 47 mg/L Si. Reading ppm SiO2 as ppm Si leads growers to overdose by about two times, so convert before dosing toward the 20-50 mg/L silicon target.

**Short answer.** Silicon is a *beneficial* element, not an essential one: plants complete their life cycle without it. In many crops it strengthens cell walls and reduces drought, salt, metal and some fungal stress [1][4][5]. Cannabis does take up and deposit Si [2], but cannabis-specific evidence for yield or quality gains is thin. If you use it, dose about 20–50 mg/L Si as potassium silicate, added to the water first, then correct the pH.

## What's happening

Soil solutions normally contain silicic acid at concentrations similar to K and Ca, so field plants always have Si. Hydroponic plants are the odd ones out: Epstein pointed out that solution-cultured plants contain only contaminant Si, which may distort research and plant performance [1]. Si is taken up as monosilicic acid, deposited as amorphous silica in cell walls and [trichome](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome.md) bases, and is immobile once deposited [5].

Cannabis evidence:

- Guerriero et al. identified the aquaporin [gene](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/gene.md) family in cannabis, including channels associated with Si transport, and found Si accumulating in tissues [2]. Cannabis is not a strong Si accumulator like rice or horsetail.
- In short-term [hemp](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hemp.md) hydroponics, added Si did not improve growth after one week but reduced cadmium accumulation in all organs and improved water-use efficiency [3]; similar work tested Zn stress.
- No controlled cannabis trial showing Si raises flower yield or cannabinoids was found.
- Powdery mildew suppression by soluble Si is well documented in cucurbits and cereals [4]. A cannabis trial was not found; treat it as *plausible, unproven*.

## How to recognise it

There is no [deficiency](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/nutrient-deficiency.md) syndrome. Silicon "[toxicity](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/nutrient-toxicity.md)" is not a thing at practical doses; the real problems are pH spikes and precipitation in the tank.

## Numbers that matter

| Parameter | Target | Conditions / notes |
|---|---|---|
| Solution Si | 20–50 mg/L Si | *Grower practice*; staying below ~56 mg/L Si avoids polymerisation |
| Monosilicic acid solubility | ~2 mM (≈56 mg/L Si) at 25 °C | Above this, silica polymerises and gels out. |
| Si vs SiO₂ | Si = 0.467 × SiO₂ | Labels often quote SiO₂; 100 mg/L SiO₂ = 47 mg/L Si |
| Potassium silicate stock pH | ~11–12 | Strongly alkaline; raises reservoir pH |
| K added | Count it | Potassium silicate supplies K as well as Si |

## How to use it

1. Fill the reservoir with water.
2. Add potassium silicate first and stir well.
3. Wait a few minutes, then add the A and B nutrients.
4. Check and adjust pH last.
5. In [coco](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/coco-coir.md) and soil, apply at the same concentration in the feed.

Adding silicate to a mixed, acidic nutrient solution makes local pH spikes that precipitate Ca and Fe, and at low pH silicic acid polymerises.

## Common mistakes

- Adding silicate after the base nutrients and getting cloudy, gelled or precipitated solution.
- Reading "ppm SiO₂" as "ppm Si" and overdosing by 2×.
- Expecting Si to rescue a mildew outbreak. It is at best a preventive aid; see [powdery mildew](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/diseases/powdery-mildew.md).
- Forgetting that the pH-up effect of silicate means you then add more acid.

## Evidence

- Si is beneficial, not essential: *Established* [1][5].
- Cannabis takes up Si: *Supported* [2].
- Si reduces metal uptake in hemp under stress: *Supported* (short-term studies [3]).
- Si improves cannabis yield or potency: *No direct evidence found*; *grower practice*.
- Si protects cannabis from powdery mildew: *Contested* (strong in other crops [4]; no cannabis trial found).
