# Uniformity

> Uniformity is how alike the plants of one seed batch are for traits such as height, timing and chemistry; F1s of inbred parents and IBLs are most uniform.

Uniformity describes how similar the plants from one [seed batch](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seed-run.md) are: in height, structure, flowering time, aroma and cannabinoid profile. It is measured by growing many plants under the same conditions and looking at the spread.

## In practice

Uniform seed is worth a lot to growers running a [sea of green](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sog.md) or a commercial room: plants finish together, fill the canopy evenly and test alike. Two routes give it. An [F1](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/f1.md) between two different [inbred lines](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/inbred-line.md) is uniform because every seed gets the same pair of genotypes. An IBL is uniform because its plants are highly [homozygous](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/homozygous.md).

Most [cannabis seed](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/achene.md) is neither, so variation is normal. Breeders describing uniformity should quantify it from tester grows: "flowering time 56 to 63 days across 40 plants" says more than "very uniform".

Uniformity is not quality, and not always a goal. Preservation seed lines and [landraces](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/landrace.md) keep variation on purpose, because diversity is what lets a population adapt and gives later breeders something to select from.

## Don't confuse with

- **True breeding**: offspring match parents over generations; an F1 can be uniform without [breeding true](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/true-breeding.md).
- **Stability of sex**: a uniform line can still carry a herm problem.
