Top shelf originally meant the jars on the highest shelf behind a counter, the most expensive ones. It now means premium flower in general.

## In practice

Shops sort flower into tiers by appearance, demand and the potency on the label. A top-shelf jar is usually large, dense, frosty, colourful buds with strong aroma. None of that guarantees a careful dry and cure, an accurate lab number, or freedom from [irradiation](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/irradiation.md), which is used in some regulated markets to meet microbial limits. Check the harvest or packaging date and the [lab report](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/coa.md), and trust your nose: a [hay smell](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hay-smell.md) means a bad dry, whatever the tier.

## Don't confuse with

- **Craft**: describes how it was grown (small batch, hand care), not where it sits on the price list.
- **Bag appeal**: [looks](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/bag-appeal.md), which drive the tier.

## Myth check

"Top shelf tests 30%+." GenetixBay position: [label inflation](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/label-inflation.md) is common, and most flower sold as mid-20s to 30s really tests mid-teens to low 20s (Jikomes & Zoorob 2018; Schwabe et al. 2023). Flower above about 35% [total cannabinoids](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/total-cannabinoids.md) is not credible.
