A taproot is the thick primary root that grows vertically from the [radicle](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/radicle.md) and stays [dominant](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/dominant.md) as lateral roots branch off it. Cannabis grown from seed forms a taproot; in open soil it can reach well over a metre deep. Clones do not have one: they grow adventitious roots from the cut stem, giving a more fibrous, spreading root system.

## In practice

In containers the taproot hits the bottom within days to weeks and turns or branches, so the classic deep taproot matters less indoors. It still matters at [transplant](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/transplanting.md): a bent, kinked or torn taproot sets a [seedling](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seedling.md) back.

House position (Grower practice, founder observation): [autoflowers](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/autoflower.md) dislike transplanting, and much of that is about how the taproot reacts. Because an auto runs on a fixed countdown from [germination](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/germination.md), any check costs it time it cannot get back. GenetixBay advises planting autos directly into the final container. See [photoperiod vs autoflower](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/basics/photoperiod-vs-autoflower.md).

## Don't confuse with

- **Radicle**: the embryonic root before it develops into the taproot.
- **Adventitious roots**: roots that form on stem tissue, as in clones.
- **Root hairs**: microscopic absorptive cells, not a root type.
