# Sodium

> Sodium (Na) is not essential for cannabis; it enters through water, softeners and some inputs, and at high levels causes salt stress and crowds out potassium and calcium.

Sodium is a functional nutrient for some salt-tolerant and C4 plants but is not essential for cannabis. It is absorbed as Na+, competes with potassium at uptake sites and raises [osmotic stress](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/osmotic-stress.md) when it accumulates. In a feed it adds [EC](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ec.md) without adding value.

## In practice

The main sources are tap or [well water](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/tap-water.md), water softeners (which swap calcium and magnesium for sodium), unwashed coco and some [organic amendments](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/organic-fertiliser.md). Yep, Gale and Zheng showed NaCl stress reduces cannabis growth, with the nutrient solution moderating the effect. Signs include leaf-margin burn, wilting despite wet media and reduced growth. Runoff that keeps climbing in EC with no rise in [feed strength](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/input-ec.md) often points to sodium or [chloride](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/chloride-nutrient.md) build-up.

## Don't confuse with

- **Salt (in grower slang)**: any fertiliser salt, not just sodium chloride.
- **Nutrient burn**: high total EC from the feed itself.
- **Potassium**: needed; sodium cannot replace it in cannabis.

## Myth check

Never water cannabis with softened water from an ion-exchange softener. Use the hard-water bypass, [RO](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ro-water.md) or a different source. See [water quality](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/ph-ec/water-quality.md).
