# Sativa

> Sativa is a popular label for tall, narrow-leaflet, slower-flowering cannabis plants; it describes plant shape at most, and all cannabis belongs to one species, Cannabis sativa.

In grower and retail use, "sativa" means a cannabis plant with narrow [leaflets](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/leaflet.md), tall, open structure and long flowering, typical of many equatorial [landraces](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/landrace.md). Botanically, *[Cannabis sativa](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabis-sativa.md)* L. is the name of the whole species, which includes every drug-type and [hemp plant](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hemp.md) (McPartland 2018). The two uses are easily confused.

## In practice

Labels use "sativa" to promise uplifting, energetic effects. The evidence does not support that. Indica/sativa labels match measured genetic ancestry poorly (Sawler et al. 2015) and do not predict [cannabinoid](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabinoid.md) or [terpene profiles](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene-profile.md) (Smith et al. 2022; Watts et al. 2021). Reported effects vary between individuals and depend on chemistry and dose, not leaf width.

Today nearly every plant is a hybrid, with a few outlier landraces. As a shape description (narrow leaflets, [stretch](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/stretch.md), long flowering) the word still has some use for growers planning space and time.

## Don't confuse with

- ***Cannabis sativa* L.**: the species, which covers all cannabis.
- **Hemp**: low-THC cannabis grown for fibre or seed; also *Cannabis sativa*, unrelated to the "sativa" label.
- **Haze or Thai types**: real lineages often called sativa; the label adds nothing the lineage does not say better.

## Myth check

House position: indica versus sativa is nonsense as a guide to effects or species. See [indica, sativa and ruderalis](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/genetics-history/indica-sativa-ruderalis.md) and [Mythbusters](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/mythbusters.md).
