A root hair is a fine extension of one epidermal cell, formed in a zone just behind the growing root tip. Root hairs are short-lived, usually days to a few weeks, and are constantly replaced as roots extend. Together they multiply the absorbing surface of a root many times over and are where most water and ion uptake happens in young roots.

## In practice

The white fuzz on a new [radicle](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/radicle.md) or on fresh hydro roots is root hairs. They are a health signal: clean, white, fuzzy roots mean oxygen and temperature are right. Brown, slimy roots with no fuzz point to oxygen starvation or [root rot](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/root-rot.md).

Root hairs are destroyed by drying (seconds to minutes in open air), rough handling and very high [EC](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ec.md). That is why a rough [transplant](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/transplanting.md) causes a short stall even when the [main roots](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/taproot.md) look fine: the plant has to regrow its absorbing surface. In [deep water culture](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/dwc.md), keeping solution near 18-21 °C (64-70 °F) with good aeration protects them.

## Don't confuse with

- **Lateral roots**: true multicellular branch roots, not single cells.
- **Mycorrhizal hyphae**: fungal threads that extend the root's reach, not plant tissue.
- **Root rot**: browning disease, often first seen as loss of root hairs.
