The rhizosphere is the thin layer of soil or medium, roughly a few millimetres, that is directly influenced by roots. Roots release sugars, organic acids and other exudates, and this feeds a microbial community far denser and more active than in the bulk medium. Those microbes help mineralise nutrients, compete with or suppress pathogens, and change local [pH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ph.md).

## In practice

Living-soil growers build the rhizosphere deliberately with compost, cover crops and minimal disturbance. In hydro, a "biological" reservoir with beneficial bacteria or fungi aims at the same idea. GenetixBay's preference for hydro is a [beneficial-microbe reservoir](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/beneficial-microbe-reservoir.md): bacteria will show up anyway, so you may as well have good ones. A fully sterile system is valid too, but only if you commit to it.

What hurts it: [overwatering](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/overwatering.md) and low oxygen, very high salt [EC](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ec.md), broad-spectrum sterilants used half-heartedly, and warm stagnant solution, which favours *[Pythium](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/pythium.md)* species.

[Molasses](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/molasses.md) and sugars fed to the [root zone](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/root-zone.md) feed these microbes, not the plant.

## Don't confuse with

- **Root zone**: the whole volume of medium roots occupy.
- **Mycorrhizae**: one specific root-fungus partnership within the rhizosphere.
- **Medium**: the physical substrate itself.
