A pollen chucker is someone who dusts one plant with another's pollen, collects the seed and releases it as a "new strain" without the work that makes a line: choosing parents for a goal, growing out large numbers, culling, testing for stability and [herm tendency](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/herm-prone.md), and recording the lineage. The term describes a practice, not a person, and it is meant as criticism.

## In practice

The typical pattern: two hyped [clone-only cuts](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/clone-only.md), one cross, one tester round or none, a fancy name, and a drop. The resulting [F1 seed](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/f1.md) can be spectacular in a few packs and a lottery in the rest, because nobody grew 100+ plants to see the spread. Pollen from a [reversed female](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sex-reversal.md) or a stressed plant that threw [bananas](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/nanners.md) makes it worse, since the herm tendency goes straight into the seed.

## Don't confuse with

- **Breeder**: works a population over generations with defined goals, large grow-outs, selection of males as well as females, and published records.
- **Hobby cross**: a home grower making seed for their own garden and saying so honestly is not chucking. The problem is marketing an untested cross as a finished line.

## Myth check

"Any cross is breeding." GenetixBay position (*Grower practice*, house standard): a cross is the first step, not the product. Herm-prone and unstable lines are mainly the result of chucking-style shortcuts, not natural cannabis behaviour.
