# Plant count limit

A plant count limit is a legal cap on the number of cannabis plants. It appears in [home grow](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/home-grow.md) rules, medical patient and caregiver rules, and some commercial licences, and it usually comes with a definition of what a "plant" is.

## In practice

Definitions vary: some count any rooted cutting or germinated [seedling](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seedling.md), some count only plants above a size, and some count only flowering plants. That definition shapes how people grow. Under a strict plant count, growers favour fewer, larger plants trained wide ([SCROG](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/scrog.md), mainlining, long veg) rather than many small plants ([SOG](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sog.md)). Under a canopy-area limit, the opposite can make sense.

Commercial licences often use [canopy area](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/canopy.md) instead of plant count, and track individual plants or batches through [seed-to-sale systems](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seed-to-sale-tracking.md).
