# pH drift

> pH drift is the gradual rise or fall of a nutrient solution's pH between adjustments, driven mainly by which ions the roots take up.

pH drift is the change in [pH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ph.md) of a reservoir or [root zone](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/root-zone.md) over time. Roots keep their internal charge balanced: when they take up more anions (especially [nitrate](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/nitrate.md), NO₃⁻) they release hydroxide or bicarbonate and the solution pH rises; when they take up more cations (especially [ammonium](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ammonium.md), NH₄⁺) they release hydrogen ions and pH falls. Most hydro solutions are nitrate-dominant, so upward drift is the common pattern.

## In practice

Other contributors: aeration strips dissolved [CO2](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/co2-enrichment.md) and nudges pH up, organic additives and microbes can push it either way, and [coco](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/coco-coir.md) or rockwool can release or absorb ions early in a run. Small reservoirs with [RO water](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ro-water.md) drift fastest because there is little buffering.

GenetixBay's view matches the accepted practice: drift within about 5.5–6.5 in hydro is normal and not worth chasing. Adjust when it leaves the range. A rising pH that keeps climbing quickly can point to root problems; a steadily falling pH may mean too much ammonium or microbial activity. Langenfeld and Bugbee (2025) showed that balancing nitrate and ammonium can control drift in [recirculating systems](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/recirculating-system.md).

## Don't confuse with

- **Meter drift**: a probe losing calibration; check with a buffer solution.
- **pH buffer**: a solution or chemical system that resists drift.
