A personal cultivation limit is the rule that sets how much cannabis a person or household may grow without a commercial licence. It is usually a number of plants, sometimes split into flowering and non-flowering plants, and sometimes a [canopy area](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/canopy.md). Some laws cap per person, others per residence regardless of how many adults live there.

## In practice

The details matter. A limit per residence means two adults sharing a home do not get double. A limit on "flowering" plants may allow extra [seedlings](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seedling.md) or [mothers](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/mother-plant.md) in veg, or may not. Clones in a propagation tray usually count once rooted. The harvest from a legal [home grow](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/home-grow.md) can also run into the separate possession limit, especially where the limit for storage at home differs from public possession.

Rules differ by country, state, province and city, and change often. This is a general definition, not legal advice: check local rules.

## Don't confuse with

- **Plant count limit**: the plant-number form of a cultivation limit; also used in commercial and medical licences.
- **Possession limit**: how much dried cannabis you may hold, a separate rule.
