An oscillating fan is a circulation fan that rotates side to side, sweeping its airflow across an arc. In grow tents and rooms, small clip-on or wall-mounted oscillating fans are the standard way to keep air moving inside the space. They do not remove heat or humidity; they spread it so the [exhaust](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/exhaust-fan.md) and [dehumidifier](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/dehumidifier.md) can deal with it.

## In practice

A 1.2 × 1.2 m (4 × 4 ft) tent typically runs two small oscillating fans: one above the canopy and one below it, aimed in a loop so air travels around the space rather than straight into a wall. Larger rooms use horizontal airflow [fans](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/fan-leaf.md) in a racetrack pattern. Aim for gentle, constant movement at the leaves (around 0.5–1 m/s), not a gale on one plant.

Signs of too much: leaves on the windward side curling, clawing, or turning papery and pale. Signs of too little: soft growth, condensation at lights-off, [powdery mildew](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/powdery-mildew.md) in the back corners. Clean the blades each cycle; dusty fans move less air and spread spores.

## Don't confuse with

- **Exhaust fan**: an inline fan that moves air out of the space through ducting.
- **Intake fan**: brings fresh air in, usually through a filter.
