Mids is slang for middle-quality flower: decent, cheaper than premium, unremarkable in aroma and [looks](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/bag-appeal.md). Calling something "mid" is now general slang for mediocre.

## In practice

The tiers are loosely defined and vary by region and decade. Flower usually lands in the mids tier for reasons of growing and handling rather than genetics: harvested early or late, dried too fast, [cured](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/curing.md) badly, stored warm, or handled roughly so [trichomes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome.md) fell off. The same cultivar grown and cured well can be [top-shelf](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/top-shelf.md).

Mids can also be honest value: plain-looking flower with a good dry and cure often smokes better than flashy flower with a rushed one.

## Don't confuse with

- **Brick weed**: compressed, seeded, usually below mids.
- **Shake**: loose fragments, a form rather than a grade.
- **Larf**: small, airy lower buds, often sold as mids.
