# Live rosin

Live rosin is made in three stages: whole plants or flowers are frozen soon after harvest ([fresh frozen](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/fresh-frozen.md)), washed in ice water to separate [trichome heads](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome-heads.md) (bubble hash), and the dried [hash](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hash.md) is pressed into [rosin](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/rosin.md). "Live" means the starting material was never dried and cured, so more [monoterpenes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/monoterpene.md) survive. No solvent is used at any stage.

## In practice

Live rosin is often considered the top tier of [solventless concentrates](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/solventless.md), and it commands a premium because it needs good washing cultivars, careful freezing, cold handling and skilled processing. Russo et al. (2021) reported that a fresh-frozen ice water method preserved [cannabinoid](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cannabinoid.md) and [terpene profiles](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene-profile.md) closely. Textures include badder, jam and sauce-like forms. GenetixBay defines the product only; no processing parameters.

## Don't confuse with

- **Live resin**: also from fresh frozen material, but extracted with solvents.
- **Flower rosin**: pressed from dried flower, not from hash.
- **Hash rosin**: may be live or cured, depending on the starting material.
