# Homogenisation (sampling)

> Homogenisation is grinding and mixing a sample so every portion the lab tests represents the whole; together with representative sampling it often matters more than the instrument.

Cannabis is not uniform. [Top colas](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cola.md), lower buds, larger and smaller flowers, and the outside versus the inside of a bud all differ in [trichome](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome.md) density and moisture. Representative sampling means taking increments from across the batch according to a plan. Homogenisation means grinding and mixing those increments so that the few hundred milligrams actually weighed for analysis stand for the whole.

## In practice

A single top bud can read several points higher than a composite of buds from the whole plant. Testing only the best-looking material is one route to [inflated labels](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/label-inflation.md). Good practice for a home grower sending a sample: take several buds from the top, middle and lower canopy, grind them together, mix thoroughly and send a portion. Labs grind again and often run replicates. Regulators specify sample increment numbers per batch size; check local rules.

## Don't confuse with

- **Homogeniser** (dairy/food): a device for emulsifying liquids.
- **Batch**: the lot being represented; homogenisation is how a sample represents it.
- **Measurement uncertainty**: lab estimates often exclude sampling error, which can be larger.

## Myth check

A single "hero bud" test is not a batch result. See [buyer beware](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/basics/buyer-beware-label-claims.md).
