Germplasm is the living genetic material of a crop held for future use: seed, pollen, [tissue cultures](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/tissue-culture.md), cuttings and whole plants. The term covers both a single sample and the collective diversity breeders can draw on.

## In practice

Germplasm conservation keeps options open. A disease resistance, a rare [terpene profile](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene-profile.md) or an early-finishing trait may sit in an old [landrace](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/landrace.md) or an obscure [heirloom](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/heirloom.md) for decades before a breeder needs it. Losing that material loses the option.

Cannabis germplasm has been poorly conserved compared with other crops, partly because of prohibition. Much of it lives in private collections: [clone-only cuts](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/clone-only.md), heirloom seed, individual breeders' stock. Each storage form has limits. Seed lasts years if dry and cold; pollen can be frozen; clones need constant upkeep; tissue culture slows growth but needs lab skill.

Preservation and documentation of germplasm is why GenetixBay exists.

## Don't confuse with

- **Gene pool**: the total set of alleles in a population or species; germplasm is the physical material that carries it.
- **Seed bank (shop)**: a company selling seed, not a conservation collection; "[gene](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/gene.md) bank" is the conservation term.
