Freeze drying (lyophilisation) freezes plant material and then lowers the pressure so that ice turns directly into vapour, skipping the liquid phase. Home and commercial freeze dryers can take fresh buds to jar-ready dryness in about a day or two instead of the usual one to two weeks.

## In practice

Claims made for it: faster turnaround, less mould risk, better [terpene](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/terpene.md) retention and colour. Evidence specific to cannabis is limited, and results reported by growers are mixed. Some like the look and aroma; others report brittle [trichomes](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/trichome.md), a different texture, and flavour that doesn't develop as a slow dry and cure does.

GenetixBay house position (Contested): not proven, and the founder isn't sold on it. We don't recommend it over a slow, controlled [hang dry](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hang-dry.md) and cure. If you try it, treat it as an experiment: split a harvest, freeze-dry half, hang-dry the other half, and compare blind. That's exactly the kind of [Bay Trial](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/bay-trials.md) GenetixBay exists to run.

## Don't confuse with

- **Freezing fresh material**: frozen, not dried, used as a processing input.
- **Hang drying**: slow air-drying in a controlled room.
- **Water curing**: a soaking method, also Contested.

## Myth check

Contested. No solid cannabis data shows it beats a proper slow dry. See [drying](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/harvest-cure/drying.md) and [Mythbusters](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/mythbusters.md).
