Ceramic sensor watering is a generic class of passive auto-watering device. A porous ceramic cone filled with water is pushed into the medium. As the medium dries, it pulls water out through the ceramic, creating suction that opens a small valve on a supply line from a raised reservoir. When the medium is moist again, suction drops and the valve closes. It works like a tensiometer controlling a tap.

## In practice

These devices are popular in living-soil and organic grows, where they keep the soil evenly moist without pumps or timers. Set the sensitivity and placement so the medium stays moist but not saturated; most kits have an adjustment for this. Use plain water or very light teas rather than strong mineral solutions, which can clog the ceramic and valve. Clean ceramics between runs.

The trade-off: they hold soil at one [moisture level](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/moisture-content.md), so there is no real [wet-dry cycle](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/wet-dry-cycle.md); that suits [living soil](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/living-soil.md) better than [coco](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/coco-coir.md) or crop steering.

- **Drip irrigation on a timer**: time-based rather than moisture-based.
- **Self-watering pot**: a wick or reservoir in the pot base.
