A beneficial element is a mineral element that is not required for every plant to complete its life cycle, but which stimulates growth or improves resilience in some species or conditions. The usual examples are [silicon](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/silicon.md), [sodium](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sodium.md), [cobalt](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cobalt.md), selenium and aluminium. An element is "essential" only if the plant cannot complete its life cycle without it and its role cannot be replaced by another.

## In practice

For cannabis, silicon is the only beneficial element growers commonly add, mainly as [potassium silicate](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/potassium-silicate.md) for stiffer stems and some stress tolerance. Sodium is a functional nutrient for certain salt-loving and C4 plants but is a contaminant for cannabis. Cobalt matters to nitrogen-fixing legumes. Epstein argued that silicon deserved more attention in plant biology because it is so abundant in tissue despite not being essential.

## Don't confuse with

- **Micronutrient**: an essential element needed in trace amounts.
- **Biostimulant**: a product category, often organic, not an element.
