Bagseed is any seed found in a bag of purchased flower. Its mother is unknown in practice, its father is completely unknown, and in modern [sinsemilla](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/sinsemilla.md) it very often comes from [self-pollination](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/selfing.md) by a plant that threw [pollen sacs](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/anther.md) or bananas late in flower.

## In practice

Many growers' first plant is bagseed, and some turn out well. The risk is genetic: if the seed came from an [intersex plant](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hermaphrodite.md), the offspring are more likely to carry the same tendency. Expect a mix of sexes, a wide spread of types and a higher-than-normal chance of intersex flowers.

If you grow bagseed, treat it as a test: watch closely for pollen sacs from week 3 of flower onward, keep it away from any plants you care about, and do not breed from it unless you have grown out enough offspring to rule out [herm tendency](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/herm-prone.md).

## Don't confuse with

- **Regular seed**: deliberately made from a chosen male and female, with known parents.
- **Feminised seed**: made deliberately by sex-reversing a selected female. Bagseed from a herm is accidental and untested.
- **Landrace seed**: [open-pollinated seed](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/open-pollinated.md) from a known population and region.

## Myth check

"Seeds in good weed are normal." In well-grown sinsemilla they are not. Seeds mean pollen reached the flowers, either from a male or from an intersex plant. See [hermaphrodites](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/diagnosis/hermaphrodites.md).
