# No weak light for seedlings: full light from the moment the cotyledons crack out

> GenetixBay's house position: don't baby seedlings with weak light. Put them under near-full light as soon as the cotyledons crack out of the shell, using a germination method that keeps the young root covered and moist. Weak light makes seedlings stretch, and plant research shows young plants grown at a higher daily light total root better and flower sooner later. The founder averages more than two weeks shaved off a run this way (field experience). The conditions: a moist, covered root zone, humid air and close watching for bleaching.

## Questions and answers

**How much light do cannabis [seedlings](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seedling.md) need?** Conventional advice is about 150–300 [µmol/m²/s](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/ppfd.md) for 18 hours, but GenetixBay's house position is to give seedlings near-full light as soon as the [cotyledons](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cotyledon.md) crack out of the [shell](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seed-coat.md), as long as the young root is kept covered and moist and the air is humid. Weak light makes seedlings [stretch](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/stretch.md). The founder averages more than two weeks shaved off a run this way (field experience).

**Why do my seedlings stretch?** Cannabis seedlings stretch because the light is too weak or too far away. Plants sense low light and a shaded spectrum and respond by elongating their stems to reach light, a response called shade avoidance. A stretched seedling has a long, thin, floppy stem. Bring the light closer or turn it up; GenetixBay's position is near-full light from emergence, with a moist [root zone](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/root-zone.md).

**Can I put seedlings under full light right away?** Yes, in GenetixBay's experience, once the cotyledons have cracked out of the shell, provided the young root stays covered and moist and the air is humid. The risk isn't the light itself but a dry or exposed root that can't keep up with the water the leaves lose. Watch the cotyledons for [bleaching](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/light-stress.md) or crisping for the first few days and raise the light a little if you see it.

**Does strong light early speed up a grow?** In horticultural research, young plants grown at a higher daily light total rooted better and reached flowering sooner: raising plug-stage light from 5 to 10 [mol/m²/day](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/dli.md) shortened time to flower by about 3–5 days in several bedding plants. In cannabis, the founder averages more than two weeks shaved off a run by giving seedlings near-full light from emergence (field experience).

**What kills seedlings under strong light?** Strong light kills seedlings only when the root can't supply water: a root that's exposed, dried out, or in a medium that dries fast, combined with dry air. Then the cotyledons wilt, bleach or crisp. Keep the root covered and evenly moist, run humid air (about 65–75% [RH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/relative-humidity.md)) for the first days, and avoid putting seedlings straight from darkness under intense light without watching them.

**Short answer, in plain words.** Most guides tell you to keep seedlings under a weak "starter" light. GenetixBay doesn't. **As soon as the seed leaves (cotyledons) crack out of the shell, the seedling goes under near-full light**, with a [germination](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/germination.md) method that keeps the young root covered and moist. Weak light makes seedlings stretch into thin, floppy stems; strong light makes them short, sturdy and fast. The founder averages **more than two weeks shaved off a run** this way (founder's field experience) [6]. The one condition: **the root must never dry out.**

> **The founder's rule:** No weak light. Once those cotyledons crack out of the shell, give them light, and keep that root covered and moist.

## Why does weak light hurt seedlings?

Weak light tells a seedling it's in the shade, so it stretches to find light. *Established (plant physiology).*

Plants read both the amount and the colour of light. Low light, and light with more [far-red](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/far-red.md) than red, triggers **shade avoidance**: the stem elongates fast, leaves stay small and the plant puts its energy into height instead of roots and leaves [1]. A stretched cannabis seedling has a long, thin [hypocotyl](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hypocotyl.md) that flops over, needs burying or staking, and loses days recovering.

The cure for stretch is more light, not less. Every guide agrees seedlings stretch under weak light; the house position is to never let it start.

## Is there evidence that more light early speeds a crop up?

Not for cannabis seedlings specifically; we found no published cannabis seedling-light trial. The horticulture research points the same way as the founder's experience. *Supported (other crops) and founder's field experience.*

- **Young plants grown at a higher daily light total root better, grow more mass and flower sooner.** In bedding-plant research, seedlings grown at higher DLI went on to flower earlier in a common environment [3]; raising plug-stage DLI from **5 to 10 mol/m²/day** shortened time to flower by about **3–5 days** in marigold, celosia and salvia [2].
- **Cannabis uses light all the way up.** Flower yield rose in a straight line with light up to about 1,800 µmol/m²/s in a controlled trial [5]; there's no reason to believe a young plant wants to start life underfed (see [more light, more yield](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/environment/more-light-more-yield.md)).
- **The founder's numbers:** near-full light from emergence averages **more than two weeks** off a run compared with weak-light starts (founder's field experience) [6]. We found no published cannabis study to confirm or refute the figure; it's a good GenetixBay grow-journal side-by-side.

**Weak 'starter' light vs near-full light from emergence**
- **Weak starter light** (Conventional advice)
  - Con: Stretched, floppy stems (shade avoidance)
  - Con: Small cotyledons and slow first leaves
  - Con: Days lost burying, staking and recovering
- **Near-full light** (GenetixBay house position)
  - Pro: Short, sturdy seedlings
  - Pro: Fast [first true leaves](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/true-leaves.md)
  - Pro: Founder averages 2+ weeks off a run (field experience)
  - Con: Needs a covered, moist root and humid air
  - Con: Watch cotyledons for bleaching the first days

## What can go wrong under strong light?

Strong light only hurts a seedling when the root can't keep up. *Supported (plant physiology).*

- **Water balance:** bright light drives [transpiration](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/transpiration.md). A tiny root that's exposed, dried out or in a fast-drying medium can't replace the water, and the cotyledons wilt, bleach or crisp.
- **Light stress:** leaves that suddenly get more light than they can use suffer photosystem II damage until they acclimate; plants repair it continuously, but stress such as drought slows the repair [4].
- **Sudden jumps:** a seedling moved straight from darkness to intense light without a moist root zone is the classic failure.

So the method matters: **root covered and moist, air humid, light near-full.**

## How does the founder do it?

> **[FOUNDER METHOD: germination technique details pending.]** The founder's germination technique keeps the young root unexposed and moist while the cotyledons go straight into near-full light. The exact steps (method, medium, light level and height, humidity and timing) will be added here once confirmed with the founder.

Until then, the principles:

1. **Keep the root covered and evenly moist from the moment it emerges.** Never let it see air or light.
2. **Humid air for the first days,** about 65–75% RH (see [seedling care](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/germination/seedling-care.md) and [do seedlings need a dome?](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/answers/do-seedlings-need-a-dome.md)).
3. **Near-full light as soon as the cotyledons crack out of the shell.**
4. **Watch the cotyledons for the first 2–3 days.** Bleaching or crisping means the root or the air can't keep up; fix moisture and humidity first, then raise the light a little if needed.
5. **Water small and often,** never soggy (see [damping-off](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/germination/damping-off.md)).

**From crack to full light.** Seed cracks: Root stays covered and moist → Cotyledons crack out of the shell → Near-full light: From day one above the medium → Watch 2–3 days: Bleaching? Fix root moisture and humidity first → Short, sturdy seedling. Source: House position and founder's field experience [6]; exact technique pending.

## Common mistakes

- Weak light "to be gentle", then fighting stretched stems.
- Strong light on a seedling whose root is exposed or drying out.
- Very dry air in the first days under strong light.
- [Overwatering](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/overwatering.md) to compensate, which invites [damping-off](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/damping-off.md).
- Moving seedlings from a dark germination spot straight under intense light without watching them.

## Quick answers

- [What light schedule should seedlings get?](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/answers/light-schedule-for-seedlings.md): Run seedlings on 18/6 or 24/0; cannabis needs no sleep period in veg.
