# Should I wash my buds after harvest?

> Wash buds only if they are dirty, such as outdoor plants covered in dust, ash, pollen or insects. Washing doesn't rescue buds with powdery mildew or bud rot, and no study shows it removes mould. If you do wash, shake the water off at once and hang the buds in moving air so the extra water doesn't start mould. Indoor plants from a clean room don't need washing.

## Short answer

Wash buds only when they are visibly dirty, such as outdoor plants carrying dust, ash or insects. A bud wash won't rescue flower with [powdery mildew](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/powdery-mildew.md) or [bud rot](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/botrytis.md). If you wash, get the water off fast and dry the buds in moving air at 15–21 °C (60–70 °F) and 55–62% [RH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/relative-humidity.md). *Grower practice*: there is no published research on bud washing.

## Why

Mouldy flower is a safety problem, not a dirt problem. Spores and possible [mycotoxins](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/mycotoxins.md) are why regulated markets test for yeast and mould [1]. No study shows that rinsing brings infected buds back into a safe range.

Powdery mildew lives on the surface of leaves and [bracts](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/bract.md) and sporulates there [2]. In dense flowers a rinse removes some of the powder at best. Removing infected material is the standard advice.

The water you add matters. Botrytis needs free water or very high humidity [3], and wet [colas](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cola.md) hung close together in a still room are an easy target. Drying has to bring buds down to [water activity](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/water-activity.md) 0.55–0.65 [4], and washing adds water you then have to remove.

## The numbers

| Situation | Wash? |
|---|---|
| Clean indoor room | No |
| Outdoor dust, ash, pollen, insects | Optional, gentle |
| Powdery mildew on buds | No: remove or bin |
| Bud rot | No: bin |
| After washing | Dry at 15–21 °C, 55–62% RH, air moving in the room |

## What to do

1. Inspect first. Break open the biggest colas and bin anything brown, grey or fuzzy.
2. If the buds are only dusty, dip whole branches in a tub of clean, cool water and swish gently. Repeat in a second tub.
3. Shake off the excess at once and hang the branches with space between them.
4. Keep the room air moving, but don't point a fan at the buds.
5. If you add [peroxide](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/hydrogen-peroxide.md), keep it dilute and rinse afterwards. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the concentrate.

## Common mistakes

- Washing PM-coated buds and calling them clean.
- Hanging soaked branches in a crowded, humid room.
- Scrubbing or squeezing the buds.
- Washing clean indoor buds out of habit.

## Follow-up questions

**Does washing buds remove powdery mildew?** Washing buds does not reliably remove powdery mildew, and no study shows it makes infected flower clean. Mildew mycelium and spores sit among the trichomes and bracts, and rinsing removes some surface powder at best. Remove or discard PM-coated buds instead. Prevent the problem next run with airflow, stable humidity and clean clones.

**Is a hydrogen peroxide bud wash safe?** A dilute hydrogen peroxide bud wash is a common grower practice, but there is no cannabis research showing it improves safety or quality, and it does not make mouldy buds safe. If you use one, keep it dilute, rinse in clean water afterwards and dry fast. Concentrated peroxide burns skin and eyes, so wear gloves and eye protection.

**Will washing buds wash off trichomes or terpenes?** Gentle washing knocks off some trichome heads and can carry away some aroma, so handle buds as little as possible and never scrub them. The bigger risk is the water: wet buds hung in a crowded, humid room can grow mould. Wash only when buds are visibly dirty, and dry them in moving air at 55–62% RH.
