# What do I do if the seed shell is stuck on my seedling?

> A seed shell stuck on a cannabis seedling (helmet head) usually comes off by itself within a day or two. Mist it, keep the air humid at 65–75% RH, wait 24–48 hours, then ease it off gently only if it is still trapping the leaves. Pulling a dry shell can snap the cotyledons or stem. It is most often caused by planting too shallow or a surface that dried out.

## Short answer

Mist the stuck [shell](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seed-coat.md), keep the air humid (65–75% [RH](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/relative-humidity.md)), and wait 24–48 hours; most cannabis [seedlings](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/seedling.md) shed it themselves. Only ease it off gently once it is soft and still trapping the leaves. Never pull a dry shell. *Grower practice*.

## Why

The shell (seed coat) dries hard once it is above the surface and grips the [cotyledons](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/cotyledon.md). Water softens it and lets it slide off.

Soil normally holds the shell back as the shoot pulls through. Shallow planting or a dry, crusted surface lets the shell ride up with the leaves.

The cotyledons feed the seedling until [true leaves](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/true-leaves.md) take over, so tearing one off is a real setback. Losing a day or two waiting costs less.

Don't overcorrect by flooding the pot. A soggy surface and a sealed, unvented dome invite [damping-off](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/damping-off.md) [2].

Once the leaves open, give the seedling proper light: young plants lit well root and grow better than dim ones [1].

## The numbers

| Item | Target |
|---|---|
| Wait before intervening | 24–48 h |
| Air humidity | 65–75% RH |
| Air temperature | 23–27 °C (73–81 °F) |
| Planting depth to prevent it | 0.5–1.5 cm (¼–½ in) |

## What to do

1. Mist the shell with room-temperature water two or three times a day.
2. Put a vented dome or clear cup over the seedling to keep humidity up.
3. After 24 hours, mist again, wait five minutes, then try a gentle wiggle.
4. If a thin inner membrane binds the leaves, tease it open with a clean needle tip.
5. If it won't budge, stop and try again the next day.

## Common mistakes

- Pulling a dry shell and snapping the stem.
- Squeezing the cotyledons rather than the shell's edges.
- Burying the seedling deeper to "push" the shell off.
- [Drowning](https://genetixbay.com/knowledge/glossary/overwatering.md) the pot instead of misting the shell.

## Follow-up questions

**Should I pull the seed shell off my seedling?** Not straight away. A dry cannabis seed shell clings tightly, and pulling it can tear the cotyledons or snap the stem just below them. Mist the shell, wait a few minutes until it softens, and try a gentle wiggle with clean fingers or tweezers. If it resists, leave it and try again after 24 hours. Many shells drop off on their own.

**Why does the seed shell get stuck?** A cannabis seed shell gets stuck when the seed was planted too shallow or the surface dried out. Normally the soil holds the shell while the shoot pulls its leaves free. With too little cover or a dry, crusted surface, the shell rides up on the cotyledons and hardens. Plant 0.5–1.5 cm (¼–½ in) deep and keep the surface just moist.

**Will a seedling die if the shell stays on?** A cannabis seedling with a stuck shell usually survives. Most shed it within a day or two once it softens, and the true leaves can still grow out from between trapped cotyledons. The risk is a shell that stays clamped for several days, which can stunt or kill the seedling if it stops the leaves opening. Damaging the stem while removing it is the bigger danger.
